July 26

Americans with Disabilities Act Anniversary

The anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act — landmark civil rights legislation that prohibits discrimination against people with disabilities in employment, public accommodations, transportation, and government services.

History

President George H.W. Bush signed the ADA on July 26, 1990. The law was the result of decades of disability rights activism, including the Capitol Crawl — a demonstration in which dozens of disabled people left their wheelchairs and crawled up the Capitol steps to urge passage. The ADA has transformed American life for disabled people, though enforcement and gaps remain ongoing challenges.

How to Participate

  • Review ADA accommodations at your workplace or school and identify gaps
  • Learn your rights under Title II (public entities) and Title III (public accommodations)
  • Read about the disability rights activists who made the ADA possible
  • Advocate for ADA compliance in your community
