First week of November

IEP Awareness Week

A week focused on educating families about Individualized Education Programs — the cornerstone of special education services in the US. IEP Awareness Week helps parents understand their rights and how to advocate effectively for their children.

History

IEP Awareness Week emerged from parent and advocacy communities seeking to demystify the IEP process. The first week of November was chosen as it falls mid-school-year — a natural checkpoint for reviewing goals and services.

How to Participate

  • Read your child's current IEP in full — do you understand every goal and service?
  • Request a copy of your procedural safeguards from your school district
  • Connect with a parent training and information center in your state
  • Learn the difference between accommodations and modifications
  • Attend an IEP training workshop if available in your area
