Occupational Therapy Month

A month recognizing occupational therapists and their work supporting people with disabilities in daily life, sensory processing, motor skills, and independence. OT is one of the most common therapeutic supports for autistic children.

History

Occupational Therapy Month has been recognized in April since 1980, organized by the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA). OT has roots in rehabilitation medicine following World War I.

How to Participate

  • Learn what occupational therapy actually involves for autistic children and adults
  • Understand sensory diets and sensory integration approaches
  • Ask your child's OT about their specific therapeutic goals and methods
  • Advocate for OT services in school IEPs — they are covered under IDEA
  • Learn about OT support for autistic adults in employment and daily living
