Physical Therapy Month

A month honoring physical therapists, who support autistic individuals with motor skills, proprioception, coordination, and physical fitness. PT addresses challenges with movement, balance, and physical development common in autism.

History

Physical Therapy Month has been recognized in October since 1981, organized by the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA). Physical therapy has roots in the rehabilitation medicine of the early 20th century.

How to Participate

  • Learn how PT supports autistic children and adults with motor differences
  • Understand proprioception and how it relates to sensory processing
  • Advocate for PT services in IEPs when motor challenges are present
  • Explore adaptive sports and movement programs for autistic individuals
  • Appreciate the PT professionals supporting the autism community
