Sensory Friendly Month

A month encouraging businesses, venues, and organizations to create sensory-friendly environments — reducing overwhelming stimuli for autistic people and others with sensory sensitivities. Sensory-friendly spaces are a concrete act of inclusion.

History

Sensory Friendly Month emerged from the work of autism organizations and disability advocates who pushed theaters, stores, museums, and restaurants to offer sensory-accommodating experiences. The movement has grown significantly in the past decade.

How to Participate

  • Ask your local movie theater, museum, or community center about sensory-friendly programming
  • Reduce unnecessary sensory stimulation in your workplace or classroom
  • Learn what makes a space sensory-friendly: lighting, sound, smell, crowding, predictability
  • Advocate for sensory accommodations in public and private spaces
  • Support businesses that proactively create sensory-friendly environments
