Autistic girls and women are frequently identified later or missed entirely, partly because diagnostic criteria were built largely on studies of boys. Traits can present differently, with more social camouflaging and interests that look conventional on the surface.
Why It Matters
Missed and late diagnosis leaves many girls and women without support and at higher risk of anxiety, depression, and burnout from years of masking. Understanding the different presentation helps them be seen, believed, and supported.
Common Misconception
Girls are not inherently less autistic; they have been under-identified. A girl making eye contact, having friends, or masking well can absolutely be autistic, and 'she doesn't look autistic' reflects a narrow stereotype.
