Eye Contact

Definition

Eye contact means looking into another person's eyes during interaction. For many autistic people it can feel intense, distracting, or even physically uncomfortable, and forcing it can make listening harder rather than easier. Looking away is often a way to concentrate on what is being said, not a sign of dishonesty or inattention.

Why It Matters

So much social judgment rests on eye contact that autistic people are often pushed to fake it, which drains energy and focus. Understanding that avoiding eye contact aids concentration helps parents protect their child from harmful pressure to perform a comfort they do not feel.

Common Misconception

A deep-rooted myth holds that avoiding eye contact means someone is lying, rude, or not paying attention. For autistic people the reverse is often true, they may follow a conversation far better when they are free to look away.
