AUTISM GLOSSARY

Makaton

DEFINITION

Makaton is a language program using signs, symbols, and speech to support communication. It uses a core vocabulary of signs, often alongside spoken words, and is widely used in the UK and internationally.

WHY IT MATTERS

Makaton supports communication for people with a wide range of communication needs. It is particularly useful when fine motor challenges limit the use of other AAC systems.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Makaton is not the same as British Sign Language (BSL). It uses some BSL signs but is a distinct system designed for communication support rather than as a complete language.
