Neurodiversity Paradigm

Definition

The neurodiversity paradigm is the framework that treats variation in human brains and minds as a natural and valuable part of human diversity, not a defect to be corrected. It holds that there is no single right way for a brain to work, and that differences like autism are best understood as difference, not disease.

Why It Matters

This framework gives parents a hopeful, respectful lens for raising an autistic child. Instead of measuring their child against a neurotypical standard, they can support who their child actually is and help them build a life that fits their real strengths and needs.

Common Misconception

Critics claim the paradigm denies that autism can be hard or that support is needed. It does not. It says differences are real and often disabling in an unaccommodating world, while rejecting the idea that autistic people are broken.
