Prosopagnosia (Face Blindness)

WeBearish mascot bear

Definition

Prosopagnosia is difficulty recognizing faces, including familiar ones and sometimes one's own. People often rely instead on voice, hairstyle, gait, or context to identify others. It occurs more often among autistic people.

Why It Matters

Face blindness can make social life stressful and can be mistaken for rudeness or indifference when someone does not recognize an acquaintance. Understanding it allows both self-advocacy and grace from others.

Common Misconception

Not recognizing someone is not a snub or a sign of not caring. Prosopagnosia is a genuine perceptual difference, and people who have it often care deeply and simply need other cues to identify who they are with.
