Support Needs

Definition

Support needs is the language many autistic people prefer instead of functioning labels. It describes the kind and amount of help a person actually benefits from in a given area, such as communication, daily tasks, or sensory regulation. Needs are specific and can change over time and across situations.

Why It Matters

This framing is more accurate and more useful for parents. Instead of a vague label, it points to what a child genuinely needs help with today, which makes it easier to advocate at school and arrange support that truly fits.

Common Misconception

People sometimes treat high and low support needs as just polite versions of functioning labels. The difference matters: support needs describe help required in real situations, not a fixed rank of how capable or burdensome a person is.
