AUTISM GLOSSARY
Transition Planning
DEFINITION
Transition planning is the process of preparing autistic and disabled students for life after high school — including post-secondary education, employment, independent living, and community participation. Under IDEA, it must begin by age 16 (and often should begin earlier).
WHY IT MATTERS
Transition planning is one of the most neglected areas in special education. Adult services and supports are dramatically underfunded. Early planning significantly improves outcomes.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Transition planning is not a one-time meeting. It is an ongoing process that should involve the student's own voice, goals, and preferences — not just professional decisions about what is 'realistic.'
