Window Of Tolerance

WeBearish mascot bear

Definition

The window of tolerance is the zone where a person feels settled enough to think, cope, connect, and learn. Inside the window, stress feels manageable. Push past the top edge and someone becomes overwhelmed and reactive. Drop below the bottom edge and they may go flat, numb, or shut down. Autistic people often have narrower windows.

Why It Matters

Learning, communication, and cooperation only happen inside the window. Knowing this reframes hard moments as capacity problems, not attitude problems. When you spot your child leaving their window, the goal shifts from teaching or correcting to helping them get back to a place where coping is possible.

Common Misconception

Parents sometimes push a child to keep going when they are already outside the window, expecting them to power through. That deepens the overwhelm. A shrinking window is not weakness. Sensory load, demands, and tiredness all narrow it, sometimes without any obvious trigger.
