Sensory Tools Starter List

Every child is different, so treat this as a menu, not a prescription. Notice whether your child seeks input (craves it) or avoids it (gets overwhelmed), and start there. Many options cost little or nothing.

Touch and deep pressure

  • Weighted blanket or lap pad (about 10 percent of body weight for kids).
  • Compression shirt or a snug hug from a bean bag / cushions.
  • Fidget toys: putty, pop-its, textured objects.
  • Budget option: a firm pillow squeeze, or rolling up burrito-style in a blanket.

Sound

  • Noise-reducing headphones or earplugs for loud places.
  • White noise or a fan for sleep and focus.
  • Budget option: a familiar playlist or audiobook at low volume.

Sight

  • Sunglasses or a cap for bright or fluorescent light.
  • Blackout curtains for sleep.
  • Budget option: dim the lights, reduce visual clutter in one calm corner.

Movement (proprioception and vestibular)

  • Mini trampoline, swing, or a wobble cushion.
  • Chewable jewelry for oral input.
  • Budget option: jumping, animal walks, carrying something heavy, pushing a wall.

Calm-down kit (build one)

  • A box with 3 to 5 favorites your child can reach on their own.
  • Keep a small version in the car and in a school bag.
