Autism Acceptance Month
A month dedicated to promoting acceptance of autistic people — not just awareness. The emphasis on acceptance reflects the autistic community's call to move beyond awareness campaigns toward genuine inclusion, accommodation, and respect for autistic identity.
History
April was originally designated Autism Awareness Month decades ago. The autistic community pushed back against the awareness framing, arguing that awareness alone changes nothing without action. Acceptance Month reflects that shift — a move from observing autism to actively including autistic people.
How to Participate
- →Learn from autistic voices — read essays, books, and posts written by autistic people
- →Review your workplace or school's autism accommodations and identify gaps
- →Use identity-first language ('autistic person') unless someone expresses a different preference
- →Support autistic-led organizations rather than those that exclude autistic leadership
- →Push back on puzzle piece imagery and blue light campaigns — ask why the autistic community objects
