Acceptance, Not Just Awareness

April is Autism Acceptance Month. Print this, post it on a fridge or a staff room wall, and share it. Awareness means knowing autism exists. Acceptance means including autistic people, accommodating how we actually work, and respecting autistic identity. Awareness is a poster. Acceptance is a ramp.

Awareness vs. acceptance

Awareness notices that autistic people are here.

Acceptance changes something so we can actually be here: a quieter room, a clearer instruction, a hiring process that does not screen out talent, a symbol that does not hurt.

Five ways to show acceptance this April

1. Listen to autistic people first. Read and share autistic writers instead of talking over them.

2. Use identity-first language, autistic person, unless someone tells you they prefer otherwise.

3. Fix one real accommodation gap in your home, school, or workplace.

4. Support organizations that are actually led by autistic people.

5. Presume competence. Assume people understand more than they can show, and speak to them accordingly.

Symbols matter

Many autistic people reject the puzzle piece. It suggests a person is a mystery to be solved or is missing a piece. The community uses the infinity symbol, often in gold, for the full range of autistic minds.

Instead of Light It Up Blue, autistic advocates say Red Instead and Light It Up Gold. If you mark April with a color, reach for those.
