AUTISM GLOSSARY

ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)

DEFINITION

ABA is a behavioral therapy based on the science of behavior and learning. It is the most researched autism intervention and the most controversial in the autistic community. Modern ABA exists on a spectrum from highly structured compliance-based approaches to naturalistic, play-based approaches.

WHY IT MATTERS

ABA shapes the therapy landscape for autistic children significantly. Understanding the range of approaches — and the autistic community's concerns — helps families make informed decisions.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

ABA is not a single therapy. It ranges from discrete trial training (compliance-focused, often criticized) to naturalistic developmental behavioral interventions (NDBI, less controversial). The goal — what the therapy tries to change — matters enormously.
