AUTISM GLOSSARY

Discrete Trial Training (DTT)

DEFINITION

Discrete trial training is a structured ABA teaching method using repeated, discrete trials: a therapist presents a cue, the child responds, and the therapist provides a consequence (reinforcement or correction). It is highly structured and repetitive.

WHY IT MATTERS

DTT has been used to teach specific skills but has faced criticism from autistic advocates for its focus on compliance and its history of suppressing autistic behaviors. It is one type of ABA — not synonymous with ABA as a whole.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

DTT is not the only ABA approach. Many practitioners have moved toward naturalistic methods. The appropriateness of DTT depends heavily on the goals — teaching toileting is different from training away stimming.
