Definition
A communication passport is a short, personal document that explains how someone communicates best. It might describe the words or signs a person uses, how they show yes and no, what helps them feel calm, and how others can support understanding. It travels with the person so new people can connect with them quickly and respectfully.
Why It Matters
For autistic people who communicate in individual ways, a passport prevents the exhausting cycle of starting over with every new teacher, carer, or clinician. It puts trusted knowledge in one place, reduces misunderstandings, and helps ensure a person is met as competent from the first meeting.
Common Misconception
Some assume a passport is only for people who cannot speak, or that it is a medical file. It is neither, it is a personal, strengths-focused tool useful for many communication profiles, written in the person's voice wherever possible.
