Total Communication

Definition

Total communication is an approach that welcomes every available way of communicating rather than prioritizing speech alone. It might blend spoken words, AAC devices, sign, gesture, pictures, writing, and body language, whatever helps a person express themselves and be understood. The goal is connection and meaning, not one preferred method.

Why It Matters

This approach frees families from the pressure to make a child talk in one specific way. When every form of communication counts, autistic people gain more chances to be understood, and the message matters more than how it is delivered.

Common Misconception

A widespread myth is that offering AAC or signs will stop a child from speaking. Practice and evidence-informed thinking point the other way, giving more communication tools tends to support language overall, not hold it back.
