AUTISM GLOSSARY

Echolalia

DEFINITION

Echolalia is the repetition of words, phrases, or sounds heard from others or from media. Immediate echolalia repeats something just heard. Delayed echolalia repeats something heard in the past — sometimes from TV, books, or prior conversations.

WHY IT MATTERS

Echolalia is a form of communication, not meaningless repetition. Many autistic people use echolalic phrases intentionally to communicate needs, regulate emotions, or express meaning. Treating it as a behavior to eliminate can shut down communication pathways.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Echolalia does not indicate lack of understanding. Many autistic people who use echolalia understand far more than they can express. It is a feature of language processing, not evidence of intellectual limitation.
