AUTISM GLOSSARY

Perseveration

DEFINITION

Perseveration refers to the repetition of a particular response, thought, or behavior even when it is no longer relevant or appropriate. In autism, it often refers to returning repeatedly to a topic, activity, or question.

WHY IT MATTERS

Perseveration can reflect anxiety, a genuine special interest, or difficulty with cognitive flexibility. Understanding the function helps caregivers and educators respond appropriately rather than simply redirecting.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Perseveration is not stubbornness. It is not willful ignoring of social cues. It often reflects a nervous system that is processing or regulating through repetition.
