AUTISM GLOSSARY

Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA)

DEFINITION

An FBA is a systematic process for identifying the function — the 'why' — of a specific behavior. Understanding what need a behavior meets allows for the development of supports that address that need more effectively.

WHY IT MATTERS

Addressing the function of a behavior (communication, sensory regulation, escape, attention) leads to lasting change. Punishing behavior without understanding its function is likely to fail or displace the behavior to something else.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

An FBA is not about proving a child is misbehaving. It is about understanding what need they are meeting and finding better ways to meet it. It should lead to support, not punishment.
