AUTISM GLOSSARY
Interoception
DEFINITION
Interoception is the internal sense that monitors the body's internal state: hunger, thirst, pain, heartbeat, bladder fullness, temperature, and emotions as physical sensations. It is increasingly recognized as a critical sensory system in autism.
WHY IT MATTERS
Interoceptive differences explain why many autistic people struggle to identify hunger, pain, or emotions in real time. This affects self-care, emotional regulation, and health outcomes.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
A child who does not notice they are hungry or hurt is not being dramatic or performative. Their interoceptive system may not be delivering reliable signals. This is a real neurological difference, not inattention.
