AUTISM GLOSSARY

Minimally Speaking

DEFINITION

Minimally speaking (also 'minimally verbal') describes people who use speech functionally but with significant limitations — fewer than 30 functional words or phrases. It is used in research and clinical contexts to identify a subgroup with specific communication support needs.

WHY IT MATTERS

Distinguishing minimally speaking from nonspeaking and fully verbal autism helps tailor communication supports. Many minimally speaking individuals make significant communication gains with appropriate AAC and support.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Minimally speaking is not a permanent category. Many people who are minimally speaking in childhood develop more robust communication — verbal, AAC, or both — with appropriate support.
