AUTISM GLOSSARY

Nonspeaking

DEFINITION

Nonspeaking describes autistic and disabled people who do not use spoken speech as their primary communication method. It is preferred over the older term 'nonverbal' by many autistic advocates, as these individuals often have robust language — they simply do not speak.

WHY IT MATTERS

The language of 'nonverbal' implied an absence of language that is often inaccurate. Many nonspeaking autistic people communicate in writing, via AAC, or through other means with sophisticated language.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Nonspeaking does not mean non-communicating. It does not mean non-intelligent. Presuming competence — assuming ability — is the correct starting position.
