Definition
A paraprofessional, sometimes called an aide or one-to-one support, is a trained staff member who assists in the classroom. They may help a specific student or several students with learning, communication, routines, or safety, working under a teacher's direction to help a child access their education.
Why It Matters
A skilled, well-matched paraprofessional can make inclusion work, offering just enough support for an autistic child to participate and grow. The right approach fosters independence and peer connection rather than keeping the child dependent or separate.
Common Misconception
An aide is not there to control a child or complete their work for them. Constant hovering can isolate a student from classmates, so thoughtful support steps back as the child gains confidence.
