AUTISM GLOSSARY

LRE (Least Restrictive Environment)

DEFINITION

LRE is the IDEA requirement that students with disabilities be educated alongside non-disabled students to the maximum extent appropriate. Removal to separate settings is allowed only when the disability is too severe for general education to be effective even with supports.

WHY IT MATTERS

LRE is frequently misapplied. Schools sometimes place students in restrictive settings by default rather than attempting inclusion with appropriate supports. Parents can challenge restrictive placements.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

LRE does not mean every child must be in a general education classroom at all times. It means the most integrated setting that is appropriate for that child. LRE is different for every student.
