AUTISM GLOSSARY

Executive Function

DEFINITION

Executive functions are the cognitive processes that support planning, organizing, initiating tasks, managing time, regulating emotions, and adapting to changing demands. Executive function challenges are common in autism and ADHD.

WHY IT MATTERS

Executive function difficulties can look like laziness, defiance, or poor motivation from the outside — when they actually reflect genuine neurological challenges with organization and initiation.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Executive function is not about intelligence or effort. A highly intelligent autistic person may have significant executive function challenges. 'Just try harder' does not address an executive function difference.
