AUTISM GLOSSARY

Person-First Language

DEFINITION

Person-first language places the person before the identity: 'person with autism' rather than 'autistic person.' It was developed by disability advocates to emphasize the humanity of people with disabilities beyond their diagnosis.

WHY IT MATTERS

Some parents, professionals, and individuals with intellectual disabilities prefer person-first language. In many medical and educational settings, it remains standard practice.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

Person-first language is not universally preferred by autistic people — in fact, most autistic adults who have expressed a preference choose identity-first language. Neither is universally correct. Follow the individual's stated preference.
