Definition
Respite care is short-term care that gives family caregivers a break. A trained caregiver looks after the autistic person for a few hours, a day, or longer, at home or in another setting, so parents and siblings can rest, work, attend appointments, or simply recharge.
Why It Matters
Caregiving is sustained and demanding, and burnout is real. Respite protects the whole family's wellbeing, including the autistic person, who benefits from caregivers who are rested and supported. It is a legitimate need, not a failure of devotion.
Common Misconception
Seeking respite does not mean a parent loves their child less or cannot cope. Rest is not selfish, and quality respite can also give the autistic person positive time with a trusted new person.
