AUTISM GLOSSARY
Autistic Burnout
DEFINITION
Autistic burnout is a state of profound physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion caused by sustained masking, chronic stress, and long-term sensory overload. It is distinct from occupational burnout and often involves loss of previously held skills.
WHY IT MATTERS
Burnout can last months or years. It can cause significant regression in functioning. It is preventable — by reducing masking demands and building in recovery time.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Autistic burnout is not laziness. It is not depression, though they can co-occur. It cannot be resolved by pushing through. The primary treatment is rest, reduced demands, and removing the requirement to mask.
