Rumination

Definition

Rumination is getting caught in loops of repetitive thought, replaying a worry, a mistake, or an unresolved situation without reaching a settled end. Many autistic people ruminate, especially over social moments or things that felt unfair or unfinished. The mind circles the same ground, and stepping out of the loop can take real effort or outside help.

Why It Matters

Understanding rumination helps you support a child stuck on something that seems small to you but looms large for them. Gentle closure, a clear plan, or a comforting routine can ease the loop better than telling them to stop thinking about it, which rarely works.

Common Misconception

Rumination is not simply worrying too much or choosing to dwell. The looping is hard to switch off by willpower. Dismissing the thought as unimportant misses that the unresolved feeling, not the topic itself, is what keeps the loop running.
