AUTISM GLOSSARY

Sensory Diet

DEFINITION

A sensory diet is a personalized plan of sensory activities designed to help a person maintain optimal arousal and regulation throughout the day. Developed by occupational therapists, it includes specific sensory inputs at specific times.

WHY IT MATTERS

A well-designed sensory diet can significantly reduce meltdowns, improve attention, and support daily functioning by proactively meeting sensory needs rather than reacting to dysregulation.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

A sensory diet is not about food. The 'diet' metaphor refers to regularly scheduled sensory input — just as a nutritional diet provides regular nutrient input. It requires individualization based on the person's specific sensory profile.
