AUTISM GLOSSARY
Shutdown
DEFINITION
A shutdown is a response to overwhelm in which the autistic person withdraws, becomes unresponsive, or loses the ability to speak or move effectively. It is the nervous system's protective response to excessive demands.
WHY IT MATTERS
Shutdowns are often invisible compared to meltdowns — they can be mistaken for compliance or indifference. They indicate significant distress and require the same compassionate response as meltdowns.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
A shutdown is not the same as ignoring someone. It is not a power play. A shutting-down person is not fine — they are dysregulated and need space, not increased demands.
