AUTISM GLOSSARY
Working Memory
DEFINITION
Working memory is the ability to hold information in mind while using it — like following multi-step directions, keeping a train of thought, or tracking where you are in a sequence. Working memory challenges are common in autism and ADHD.
WHY IT MATTERS
Working memory affects academic performance, daily functioning, and the ability to follow instructions. Accommodations like written instructions and visual supports can compensate significantly.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Working memory difficulty does not indicate low intelligence. A person with an exceptional long-term memory may have significant working memory limitations. These are distinct systems.
