Definition
Autistic fatigue is a deep, ongoing tiredness that builds from the constant work of navigating a world not designed for autistic minds and bodies. Masking, sensory input, social effort, and managing demands all drain energy faster than rest replaces it. It is heavier than ordinary tiredness and does not fully lift after one good night of sleep.
Why It Matters
Fatigue is often the warning stage before full burnout. Catching it early, and allowing real recovery, can prevent a deeper collapse of skills and wellbeing. Recognizing your child is tired in this specific way, rather than lazy or unmotivated, lets you protect their energy before it runs out.
Common Misconception
It gets dismissed as normal tiredness or an excuse. But rest alone often does not fix it, because the drain comes from constant effort and overload. Telling an exhausted autistic person to simply try harder or sleep more overlooks what is actually draining them.
