Definition
A comfort object is a specific item, a toy, a soft fabric, a particular fidget, that provides reassurance and regulation. For autistic people of any age, it can be an anchor of predictability and sensory comfort.
Why It Matters
Comfort objects are a valid, low-cost self-regulation tool that can prevent escalation and ease transitions and unfamiliar settings. Respecting them, at any age, supports emotional safety.
Common Misconception
Relying on a comfort object is not immature or something to be grown out of on a schedule. Adults use comfort objects too, and taking one away as a lesson usually removes a support and increases distress.
