AUTISM GLOSSARY

Section 504 Plan

DEFINITION

A Section 504 plan is an accommodation plan for students with disabilities under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Unlike an IEP, it does not provide specialized instruction — it provides accommodations to allow access to general education.

WHY IT MATTERS

Some autistic students who do not qualify for an IEP qualify for a 504 plan. A 504 may provide extended time, preferential seating, sensory accommodations, and other supports without requiring specialized instruction.

COMMON MISCONCEPTION

A 504 plan is not a lesser IEP. It is a different tool for a different need. For students who do not need specialized instruction but do need accommodations, a 504 can provide meaningful support.
