AUTISM GLOSSARY
Unmasking
DEFINITION
Unmasking is the process of gradually reducing or stopping the concealment of autistic traits. It can be deliberate or happen during burnout when masking capacity collapses. Many autistic people find unmasking essential to wellbeing.
WHY IT MATTERS
Unmasking is associated with improved mental health, authentic relationships, and reduced burnout. It also may involve grief — processing the years spent suppressing one's natural self.
COMMON MISCONCEPTION
Unmasking does not mean being rude or socially inappropriate. It means not spending energy hiding who you are. It does not require abandoning all social accommodation — it means the accommodation is voluntary rather than exhausting concealment.
